Japan Food Fair

Hello earthlings!

It's such a happy day! I hope you had a great day today too! Anyway, I want to share my happiness with you guys!

As you know, I'm a fan of Japan. I LOVE everything about Japan, there is just nothing for me to detest about. Hence, when I heard about Japan's unfortunate event, my heart sank. I was and still am sad about it, and I definitely hope they will be strong. I am sure they will! Gambatte Japan! If you guys do visit shops such as Topshop, Japanese restaurants or just anywhere where you see donation boxes for Japan. PLEASE help them, it doesn't matter whether it is $1 or less or more, just DONATE. Your kind thoughts and that amount of effort you try to help will definitely help them, so please do! Thank you!:D

Back to the topic, I knew about this Japan's food fair they are holding in Tampines mall today. (FYI, it ends on 10 April 2011, so it's not to late to pay a visit to it (; ) Momsie and I headed down with much excitement. However, ofcourse she was worried about whether the food are safe. Don't worry, it is and they have stated a notice just outside the booths. The food were from Kyushu where it is a part of Japan that is not being affected. It was really crowded, so if you guys hate the crowds, do avoid visiting during the weekends.

Despite the crowd, we still managed to get seats for our ramen. It's really expensive and I would definitely NOT recommend you guys to try, it is kind of not worth it. :/ So here is a picture of it.

Beside the ramen, we also bought fried seafood which we have tried before last year at Takashimaya's basement. We love the fried hotate, we just love hotate! However, it was not as good as the previous one that we had tried, hence another disappointment. We ordered 2 potato croquettes as well, crab and sweet potato. The sweet potato one was better but still I would not recommend you guys to try any of it.

After that we head on for our ice-cream! How can we miss out ice cream!?! This one, yes you MUST try! It is totally worth it even though it is pricier than our normal ice cream but hey you don't get to eat these often! They have four flavours altogether, Black sesame, strawberry, milk and one more which I have forgotten(woops). My momsie had the strawberry one whereas I tried the milk one. She ate it before I even had the chance to take a picture of it. I tried a bit of the strawberry one, it's sour so if you like sour do go ahead because I like! However, since it was expensive so I did not get a second serving, if not I would!

Before heading home we bought some food back home for dinner too! We ordered a sweet sweet potato as well as rice cake(mix with sweet potato) with red bean inside. They have a tempura sweet potato which we have tried however we prefer the sweet one. Also for the rice cake they have plain and red bean, so we got the red bean one! Their value set are only $15 in which you can save $3 because 400g of sweet potato originally cost $10 and 3 pieces of rice cake cost $8! It is really worth trying. x)

So if you guys have time next week, do head down to Tampines Mall for the Japan food fair, you sure won't want to miss out!

Other than that, we have visited Yamakawa, it's my favourite Japanese snack store located at Tampines One basement. They are not selling my chocolates anymore ): however, I managed to get some sweets! :D Also, we got strawberry steam cake from one of my favourite Japanese Bakery, Yamazaki! Here is a picture which I took outside their shop, be prepared to drool!

I was so in love with their strawberry shortcake and strawberry fudge cake, however it was quite expensive so I decided to give it a miss. Till next time cakes!! My new project is to take a snap of all the pastries in the world! Hahahahas, this is probably the longest food critic I have given ever!

Sayonara!

Dessert

Living in Singapore is a blessing. Why? Because you get to have a variety of desserts in almost anywhere! Singapore is a sunny island, well with a few monsoon season months ofcourse. However, what's not to like about desserts?

This dessert stall is located at the building just beside OG. It offers both hot and cold desserts. I know you must be thinking it must be the same as any dessert stalls out there, what is so special about this? Their hot desserts are made fresh by themselves, not deliver from factory. That is why it is special. Almost all the hot desserts that you buy at elsewhere, mostly are delivered from factories.

Just look at the below pictures, isn't it mouth-watering? :D
I definitely would recommend mango and chin chow mix if you like to go for a cold dessert. The mango is so fresh that you'll be surprise. Every mouth of it just taste like heaven. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself!

Hot dessert (in which I forgot what it was)

Mango and chin chow mix.
Rate: 5/5 mangos!

Strawberry paradise. (Peppermint ice cream on top)
Rate: 2.5/5 strawberries

If you are not a fan of peppermint ice cream like me, don't go for strawberry paradise!
I'll take note of the location the next time I go alrights? Sorry!

Din Tai Fung

A cold vegetable appetizer to go with before you start your main course! It's a must to have when you're there for your lunch/dinner!

Overall ratings: 4.3/5

I really hated this. I love bitter gourd! However, this one is so much bitter than bitter gourd. It's just plain tasteless and bitter. Yes, is that bad.

Overall ratings: FAILED.

Beef Ramen! The beef is very tender and easy to bite off. Yes, however the soup was not as salty, therefore you should add vinegar and pepper in order to spice it up! Other than that, everything is nice!

Overall ratings: 4.3/5

Xiaolongbaos? NO! It's Yam xiaolongbaos! It's time to discard the original xiaolongbaos and try this as dessert! This is by far, my favourite in the restraurant! The sweetness of Yam with soft outer layer of flour, it's just a perfect match!

Overall Ratings: 4.6/5

Bedok Hokkien Mee

Bedok Hokkien Mee

It's not easy getting here if you do not have a car. However, it is always crowded! Just look at the queue for this Hokkien Mee stall! Sometimes you really have to wait for more than 20 minutes! Yes, that's how popular it is.

I was really excited about it when I saw the queue. However, as you know with expectations comes disappointment. The taste just wasn't up to my expectations. I guess whats nice is the thin mee fen. As you all know that usually for Hokkien Mee, their mee fen are thicker ones.

Better luck next time!

Overall ratings: 2.5/5 mee

Ba Chou Mee!

This stall is located in the hawker centre just opposite albert OG! It's the best Ba Chou Mee in town I tell ya! They are so far the only Ba Chou Mee I know that has Black Sauce Noodles! It tastes Superb!

Not only do they have the special black sauce noodles, they also have their well known fishballs! They have a normal fishballs, meatballs and chilli in the fishballs. Most of the time their customers would change the normal fishballs to chilli fishballs. However, I prefer their normal fishballs because just with one bite it feels so chewy!

You definitely have to try it despite each time I visit the stall they would have long queue! So save yourself some trouble from visiting them during lunch time! (:

Overall ratings: 4.8/5 fishballs

Ang Mo Kio Hawker Centre

Initially when I was there I did not know what to eat as it has been a really long time since I have visited this Hawker Centre. They have renovated and shifted all the stalls around. So as I was looking around, I saw long queues for this particular carrot cake stall, I thought "Hey, since so many people are queuing it should be nice!" Indeed, the outer layer of the eggs was very crispy. It would be good if you are able to finish it while it is still hot. They have been featured by mediacorp before, sadly I didn't take a picture of their stall as I was too happily eating.

Next, this satay beehoon stall has been around in this hawker centre for a very long time and still taste as good as the last time I had tried it! The satay sauce is just nice, not very watery or too thick. However, I find that their ingredients were not a lot as they only have a prawn and a few pieces of meat. The cuttlefish was very QQ. It's definitely a must to try! Just to let you know the carrot cake is just two stalls away from this satay stall. So now you know where to find it!

Overall ratings for carrot cake: 4/5 crispiness

Overall ratings for satay bee hoon: 4.8/5 satays

AMK HUB (Basement)

I love durians, so whenever I visit AMK Hub, I never fail to buy these durian kuehs back home to eat! They are very generous with their portion of durians which was why it is nice.

 It's $1.50 for one!

Overall ratings: 4.5/5 durians

Somewhere in Singapore

Tonic Soup

I didn't take note of where this place was as my dad brought us there for lunch. It's the second time I was there so the next time I would give you guys the address alrights! (:
I ordered the old winter melon soup. I LOVE winter melon and for all the soup that I have drank before mostly are all filled with old winter melon. The first taste of it was already heavenly delicious. The old winter melon itself was very soft too. The main lead was the soup itself, it was very sweet which made it taste yummy as they added honey dates inside.

As for the chicken feet soup, it is quite salty to my liking.

Overall ratings: 4.5/5 soup

Prawn Noodles

I love the prawn noodles from here! Even if you take away back home to eat, it will still taste as delicious as ever! The only thing that is not nice would be their soup. It wasn't up to expectation. However, they are very generous with their prawns and it's not very hard to chew off from the prawn shell.

Overall ratings: 4.5/5 prawns

Shokudo (Raffles City)

Omelette (Plain)

YES. I visited them that day AGAIN! This time I finally ordered their plain omelette! It's very sweet and together with their sauce, it just felt like I was eating Tako Pochi! However, I would still recommend you guys to try it but preferably with some other toppings they have.

Overall ratings: 3.8/5 eggs

Alrights, that's all for now foodies!

Sakura Family Restaurant  (Compass Point)

I have not visit this restaurant for a very long time, however that day when I visited them everything looks the same as previous years I've visited. Nothing much has really changed.

So I ordered a set meal for 2 which includes everything above as you can see. I was very much disappointed with the food as it tasted much better last time.

The chicken wings were not very oily however it failed to have the thick flavour of "ha jiong kai". The spicy shrimp kang kong was the best dish out of all. Tom yam soup has too little ingredients and the spicyness was not there. Lastly, the dessert was red ruby which is actually chestnuts.

I probably wouldn't visit them for quite a long time, again.

However, if you would like to give it a try and visit them, they are located inside of compass point on the third floor. ->

Compass Point, 1 Sengkang Square, Singapore 545078Telephone number: +65 6388 7414

Overall ratings: 2/5 spicyness

Pasir Ris Fish Soup (Ang Mo Kio)

My parents brought me to AMK to try out this stall's fish bee hoon. The soup is much oily as compared to other fish bee hoon stall. The fish were very fresh too! However, the next time I visit them I would much prefer to order only fish soup rather than their bee hoon, because I got rather sick of it after having much.

It's really worth trying even though they do not have those milk fish soup when I ordered fried fish. It still taste good, better than I have thought it would be!

So here's the address:

Blk 453A Ang Mo Kio Ave 10

Overall ratings: 3.5/5 fishes

Alrights food lovers! That's all for now, I shall be back to update with more food reviews soon!
